2016 was quite a remarkable year for beauty and fashion; from penis lipsticks to lace up everything—last year was a roller coaster ride of one beauty trend after another. Here's a quick rundown of our top picks from last year’s trends in fashion and makeup.
Last year’s spring runway was all about the off the shoulder trend. From tops to couture gowns, this trend has gone through a myriad of possibilities - as evidenced by these two winter friendly 'cold shoulder' tops. The exposed shoulders and collar bones provide the perfect amount of sultry and chic.
Bold Floral Prints
Floral prints got bigger and bolder during last year’s pre-fall runway. With its perfect mix of dainty and edgy, we just can’t get enough of this floral print trend. Think Sunday dresses, except made bolder using stark contrast and bold print. Check out these two stunners from ASOS and Nasty Gal and try to stop yourself from falling in love with the gorgeous prints.
Long T-Shirt & Over-The-Knee Boots
We saw a handful of celebrities donning this unexpected but effortlessly cool style last year, including a variation with oversized sweaters. While it might not be everyone's cup of tea, something about it just screams badass to us.
Speaking of over-the-knee boots, they were absolutely everywhere last fall. Suede, leather, lace up, flat, stiletto, and even denim - there was a style for everyone. These were a couple of our favorites (picking just a couple was ridiculously difficult).
For a classy look that won’t compromise comfort, go for a block heel. Use these in exchange for that painful pair of stilettos, and see for yourself.
Another comfort friendly but style conscious trend seen last year was booties. Not only do they look cute, but they're pretty versatile and can be worn with dresses and jeans alike.
Matte lips were literally everything last year. And it seemed like almost everyone was coming out with their own line of liquid to matte lipsticks to fill the need. If you're like us you've probably tried quite a few formulas looking for the perfect staying power. Our ultimate favorite was the Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lip. This stuff will not let you down. Another contender was the NYX Lip Lingerie - while not as long lasting as Kat Von D's formula, it does a great job for less than half the price.
Gimme That Glow!
Does this really even need an intro? Highlighting and contouring was one of the most talked about beauty trends last year and even those who didn't prefer a sculpted contour still couldn't help but reach for some glowy goodness. Wanna get your strobe on? Check out one of the Anastasia Beverly Hills Glow Kits. And if you want to see your highlight from space, try a cream highlighter like Benefit's Watts Up! underneath.
Red-toned shadow was a pretty big thing in 2016. And if you have an IG account, i'm sure you've seen how gorgeous it is. The Modern Renaissance palette from Anastasia pretty much killed it with a great mix of gorgeous fall tones.
What were some of your favorites from 2016? Did any of these make your list? Let us know!
